How to rewrite MBR [Master Boot Record].

My problem happen from :

1. Install Windows XP.

2. Ghost full haddisk which name of this image is XP-Only.img .
3. Resize&Create parttion on harddisk for prepare installation Ubuntu OS.
4. Install Ubuntu on new partition.

5. Ghost full harddisk to image backup which name of this image is XP-Ubuntu.img . It can full backup.
6. Test to restore image backup to harddisk by image XP-Ubuntu.img which it can not restore , it’s crash. So that you can not start it again.
7. Restore image XP-Only.img again which this image has Windows XP only that you can restore.

8. After you restore completed , you can not start. You found blank screen.

How to fix :

1. Download program Master Boot Record Auto write from this site : http://us1.download.acronis.com/support/mbrautowrite_en.iso

2. Burn disk image to CD.

3. Boot your laptop&PC from this CD.

4. After you boot your laptop, you should find this message :

Starting Acronis Loader…
XFDisk http://home.pages.de/~xfdisk will rewrite your
Master Boot Record [MBR] automatically.
Remove data medium and reboot now if you don’t want this.

Press any key to rewrite MBR…

5. Enter and you find this message

Starting Acronis Loader…
XFDisk http://home.pages.de/~xfdisk will rewrite your
Master Boot Record [MBR] automatically.
Remove data medium and reboot now if you don’t want this.

Press any key to rewrite MBR…

No command for booting operating system. Press <Enter> to reboot …

6. If your laptop can not automatic boot , you can restart by press Ctrl+Alt+Del

    HEEELP! I did exactly the same as you, and now I get a black screen saying invalid operating system… I have Vista Home premium, please help me.

    Hi Salvatore,
    I would like to say this solution doesn’t work with Vista. I found this problem like you and and fix this problem by recovery my partition by Lenuvo StartRecovery. So if your laptop is IBM/Lenuvo , you can fix this problem.

    Thanks aoddy, but my laptop is HP, and I already reinstalled Vista with the DVD so no problem anymore, just wont touch or delete anything again.

    I have a notebook hard disk that I put into external case and can be accessed through
    USB. This disk partition is not showing to partition magic , where as it used to display
    earlier.It shows BAD. I believe if I rewrite MBR it will works. My question how can I do rewrite MBR on external drive,I need the exact command that I can write through command promt or any other way to getit fixed. Thanks.

    I think, it is better if you use software for solving your problem.. and i suggest this tool..

    Download it, then burn and boot up with the live CD, then use DiskTest in the system tools menu….
    I thing you will can recover your lost partitions…

    Just try… but BE CAREFUL I’m not quarantine for losing your data..
